Commissioner of Oaths
The Legal Information Clinic at McGill provides a free Commissioner of Oaths service to members of both the McGill and Montreal communities. There is always a Commissioner available during clinic hours.
Commissioners of Oaths are empowered to administer oaths. This means that they can officialise an oath that a person takes before them, affirming, for example, that the information contained in a certain document is true, or that a certain document is a true copy of the original. However, Commissioners of Oaths cannot certify that a document is a true copy of its original, or that its contents are true; they can only administer another person’s oath.
If you have any questions with regards to the powers and limitations of Commissions of Oaths, please contact the Registry of Commissioners of Oaths by calling 1-800-465-4949 and selecting option 4.
We invite you to communicate with the organization requiring your documents to make sure Commissioner of Oaths is the service you need.
If you believe you need the services of a notary rather than a Commissioner of Oaths, you can call 1-800-NOTAIRE.
When you come to the Legal Information Clinic at McGill to make use of its free Commissioner of Oaths service, please be sure to bring any photocopies you need, as well as a piece of government-issued photo ID.
